Notes on Erivo

Tony Award-winning actress, Cynthia Erivo started her acting career on television. She starred in the British productions, ‘The Tunnel’ and ‘Chewing Gum’. But it is on stage that Erivo has made a mark as a performer of note. Her first main stage role was in ‘Marine Parade’ at the Brighton Festival. She then went on to play Deloris Van Cartier/Sister Mary Clarence in Sister Act.

Erivo played Celie Harris in ‘The Colour Purple’ at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory
In 2013, Erivo played Celie Harris in ‘The Colour Purple’ at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory n 2015, she reprised the role in her Broadway debut, starring alongside Oscar-winning actress, Jennifer Hudson.

Erivo was born to Nigerian immigrant parents in Stockwell, South London, on 8 January 1987. After her parents divorced, she and her younger sister, Stephanie, were raised in social housing by their mother, a health visitor.
Erivo enrolled at the University of East London to study music psychology but dropped out after a year to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, a decision she does not regret. It wasn’t long after graduation before the jobs started coming in.

She credits her strong Catholic upbringing and her mother for her work ethic.
“Watching mum work hard made me do the same,” she says, quoted in the Daily Mail. “I’ve watched her since I was little and I’ve picked up on how hard she works, and the fire she has in her belly.”

Erivo’s hard work has paid off. She was nominated for a Drama League Award, and has won an Outer Critics Circle Award, a Drama Desk Award and the biggest of them so far, a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in the Broadway revival of ‘The Colour Purple’.

Other plays in this category are Stephen Karam’s ‘The Humans’, Mike Bartlett’s ‘King Charles III’, Florian Zeller’s ‘The Father’ and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ‘Hamilton’, which scored a record 16 nominations. It is Gurira’s first Tony nomination and she happens to be the only female nominee in this category. In addition to the nomination for Gurira, ‘Eclipsed’, also, got several other nominations for its cast and crew. Finally, Psquare Reveals Truth About Their Rift

Recall that the Psquare brothers had a misunderstanding few months back which broke out to the hearing of the public and caused lots of controversies between them.

While some were blaming it on Peter's wife, Lola Okoye, some were blaming it on other deep issues. Well, the music duo have come out to clear the air when they featured on 'The Truth' with Olisa.

According to them the rift had nothing to do with money, wives or anything else but what caused it all was choice of music between the twins. They explained that they have arguments at intervals on the type of music they should do and that could happen to any body.

Peter said, “the truth but nothing but the truth is that it has nothing to do with money, it has nothing to do with women, it is just a normal thing the way you argue or quarrel with your siblings, it is normal, the sad thing about it is that it got out, after all when it was happening we were still performing in shows, so people took our private life to our business, I don't blame this fans after all we owe them apologizes, but for the fact that they took it too far. Yes I and Paul had a rift, I think it was mere argument.

Paul continued saying it was about music, when it comes to music am somebody that even though I want to bring something, the new stuff I want to bring I still want to maintain it to us, but he wanted to bring something different and for me it was like, you cannot stand the way we do things, if you want to change bring it gradually, you cannot just switch fast immediately, I think it is going to hit us, it has to do with the song, the song selection in the album because there are some songs he prefers and there are some songs I prefer and this thing has happened before during the days of 'Do Me' he said
Peter took it up from there saying “during the days of Do Me, I never liked Do Me, how we ended up selecting that song was Jude because we had about 28 songs, Jude said peter choose your best five, Paul choose your best five, Paul's best five Do Me was inside, I never selected it, and that was how we released that album, although Paul won because in that album No One Like you, Ifunaya, most of his own selections went far, mine was just Roll it, more than a friend was just there, those are the things that happens in every album, the truth is that this whole Psquare fight quarrel is for the fans, because we are trying to bring out the best”
Paul concluded by saying when the whole news about the rift came out and the fans were blaming it on the wives he just laughed because it is a price they had to pay, “Who send us go dey popular” he said.

Makeup artist ‘chops’ off actor’s hands on set (photos)

Can you figure out how Special Effects Makeup Artist, Hakeem Onilogbo made this happen?
Becoming a movie make-up artist often starts in childhood. At least, that's how it worked for some well-known make-up artists. After several criticism about the Nollywood industry especially about sound effects and make-ups, the movers of the make believe world are actually putting their hands on deck to make an improvement in the industry as soon as possible.
To many analysts, it is believed that once some of the key parts of the make-believe world are rebranded with creative minds, the industry will be able to stand shoulder-shoulder with the Hollywood counterparts.

Photo is from a war scene on a Nollywood movie set. Also see the zombies, men he gave boobs after the cut.
Recently, multiple award winning make-up artiste, Hakeem 'Effect' Onilogbo, has helped put Nigeria as one of the world's most creative country with the creation of the first 'Naked fat suit' in Africa.
Movie watchers will quickly recall that it is the costume that Hollywood star, Eddie Murphy used in Naughty Professor, and Martin Laurence also acted with it in Big Mama.

He created this in a new movie directed by Ernest Obi which stars the likes of Olu Jacobs, Pet Edochie, Ijele Ejiofor and others.

Why my dad threatened to arrest D’banj, Don Jazzy – Davido

HKN artist Davido has revealed his rough road to stardom despite being the son of a billionair
The Omo Baba Olowo singer revealed how he had to go against his father’s wish to be who he is today. It was as bad as his dad Deji Adeleke threatening to his now manager Kamal Ajiboye.
davido and dad
In a new interview with Ebro Darden of Hot 97 in New York few days after his performance at One Africa Music Festival Davido shared his initial challenges in pursuing his music career.

I was hanging out with D’banj at the time, he had that Kanye deal. I now told my Dad that I was trying to stay, and he was like ‘What? My friend you better go back to school. I called my roommate, and told him ‘Imma do this no more. If my Dad calls, tell him you don’t know where I’m at. When I left, my family was looking for me for like six months. They sent a letter to D’banj’s house, they sent letter to Psquare’s house, they sent letters to everybody’s house. My Dad was calling the school, and they were telling him; ‘He wasn’t even here for the past semester, he left…’ It was like the whole Nigeria knew who I was before I even dropped a single. Kamal that is my manager now, used to be Don Jazzy’s assistant. My Dad started calling him and said ‘if I see you guys with my son, all of you are getting arrested.”

He also revealed he has three songs in the works with American rapper Young Thug. He also defined his genre of music.
I don’t even call my music Afrobeat, I call mine Afrofusion. To me it’s just too different. I can’t tell you it’s Afrobeat, because it’s not. ‘You know the originator of the Afrobeat is Fela. Fela has a sound which I can say has heavy baseline, brass instrument, and the percussion is different. If you ask me ‘Gobe’ is Calypso, Afro mixed with Calypso. But I feel like the Afrobeat is catchy and has caught the wave since time. Because I know some Afrobeat songs that I don’t want to call Afrobeat. I call them Afro-Pop or I call Afro Trap. Everything is just still African music.”

Meanwhile, Davido has decided to be giving back to the society by sending less privileged students to school through a scholarship he named after his late mother Veronica Adeleke. In 2016, he said he will send four indigent students to school.

AN INSIDE ACTING PERSPECTIVE WITH ADELA ELAD CAMEROONS SCREEN DIVA

In both scripts and life, personality traits tell us a lot about people. A casting brief, for example, could say the character is “loud and sarcastic” or “quiet and loyal” to help you prepare for the role. That’s not ALL the character is, but it tells you key things about them. The same goes for personality traits in people that we meet, and also in ourselves. Considering the personality traits that make great actress, then, means we can find them around  and use them to help hone aspiring craft“
The person needs to be comfortable with being seen and heard,” she tells Clare, later adding that “it’s got to be someone who’s got a keen interest in humanity and what goes on as well
.”An interest in psychology of the self is also important, as Clare points out during our conversation, as well as the ability to self reflect and open yourself up in front of people so that they can connect to you and the reality of the situations you’re exploring. When acting works it’s because it’s recognizable
,most people stay within an “incredibly small bandwidth of their potential and resources”. With lines, for example, some actresss get into the (bad) habit of thinking there is a specific way to say them or a goal to achieve. But adela says moving beyond your usual “bandwidth” or staying open-minded is more rewarding.
“I think it’s great to take away the idea that there is some set path or form that line should take, and therefore the person’s trying to find their way to ticking the box and going ‘oh, that’s okay now’,” she says.

Acting technique is paramount to anyone wanting to be a serious actress. It's quite easy to imitate a character or even an emotion, but where's the depth in that? How can you sustain or repeat again what you might have found intuitively? Do you even know what you did or how you did it?

The technique, however, will help you find a character, which in turn informs how you approach the text/script/written word. How do you bring the dialogue alive? How do you know what choices to make? The goal of a talented gifted actress is to become a fully realized three-dimensional character, with a rich backstory. I must believe the character you play is truthful and not a cliche, a caricature, a thin external representation of someone who barely resembles a human being. I must believe what you say is real and that you're not reciting, spouting or commenting
over the years, I have adapted into 10 key acting questions every actress should answer in order to be a fully rounded and connected actress
1. Who am I?
2. Where am I?
3. When is it?
4. Where have I just come from?
5. What do I want?
6. Why do I want it?
7. Why do I want it now?
8. What will happen if I don't get it now?
9. How will I get what I want by doing what?
10. What must I overcome?

Kenya: Outrage As Congo Star Olomide Kicks Woman

National Gender and Equality Commission has asked the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to arrest Congolese Lingala musician Koffi Olomide for assaulting a colleague.
The musician was captured in a video kicking a woman who is believed to be a member of his band moments after they landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Friday morning.
Commission chairperson Winfred Lichuma said it was unfortunate that the incident happened in full glare of cameras and police officers.
"The incident has caused an outpouring of public outrage over the apparent cruelty and inhuman treatment exhibited by a globally renowned musician on one of his band members," Ms Lichuma said.
She said the musician should be dealt with in accordance with the Kenyan law if he is found guilty of assault.

The commission also said that the musician ought to apologise to the public.

The Penal Code states that any person who unlawfully assaults another is guilty of a misdemeanor and is liable to imprisonment for one year.

CONDEMNATION

Video footage of the Congolese Lingala Selfie hit song star and bad boy of African music kicking the woman immediately went viral. Condemnation was instant and all-round.

Three MPs asked how the foreign musician could be allowed to walk free despite committing the offence as police watched.

"Koffi's passport should be confiscated immediately," said Taita-Taveta Woman Representative Joyce Lay, who has in the past complained of being assaulted by a fellow legislator.

Ms Lay made a statement in Parliament in the company of fellow MPs Alfred Keter (Nandi) and Johanna Ng'eno (Emurua-Dikir).

"He should be in custody now," said Mr Keter, while Mr Ng'eno called on Mr Olomide to either leave the country voluntarily or be deported.

He said: "We will ensure that the concert does not take place."

Olomide is expected to perform tonight at the Bomas of Kenya.

HISTORY OF BAD BEHAVIOUR

The 60-year-old singer, who has a history of violent behaviour, especially against women, kicked a member of his dance troupe, the Quartier Latin Band, after arriving from Kinshasa, DR Congo.

DAVIDO GIVING TIPS ABOUT WEARING RIPPED JEANS.

If anyone had told me 3years  ago that I’d not only be wearing ripped jeans but actually loving wearing them, I would have laughed quite loudly at the suggestion.
I did the ripped thing back in the day – when the early ’90s were leveraging themselves out of the ’80s and into the grunge for which the era would be known.
When I say I did the ripped thing, I should clarify it. I did it with one garment – a pair of denim boyfriend shorts.
Boy did I love those shorts. Until the rip got too big and I thought my legs didn’t need quite that much ventilation.
This year I pulled on these jeans from Bohemian Traders and it was instant love. Recently I was also sent a pair from jack n jones i fell in love with it

I’ve tried to analyse the appeal.
Is it the anti-fashion nature of the garment? The contrast factor of wearing something ripped or distressed alongside something pristine.
Do they make me feel tough? Or young? Nostalgic?
Possibly all of the above, if I really think about it.
Given that my criteria (and it should be your criteria too) for deciding what takes up my valuable wardrobe real estate is highly dependent on how I feel in a garment, then these two pairs of jeans are very much here to stay.

Ripped jeans style tips

1. Rips or no rips – your jeans need to fit you well. Take the time to try on lots of pairs to find ones that fit your legs, are firm enough that you struggle to put two fingers between your tummy and the waistline and are cut to off your shape to your best advantage. If comfort is a primary factor for your jeans wearing, then opt for a pair that have stretch in the fabric. Remember the more stretch in the fabric, the more the jeans are likely to “give”, so the more you need to buy them firm to start with. Conversely, jeans without stretch will give very little on wearing, so buy to feel good on first try.

2. It’s all about the contrast. The very fact that your jeans are ripped means that you are contrasting a streamlined garment with something less fussy. Contrast that even further buy opting for shape and structure in the rest of your outfit. It’s about mixing the “tough” with the soft. Any time you achieve that contrast you’re creating an outfit with greater interest and appeal.

3. Don’t worry that you think you’re too old to wear ripped jeans. The moment we start to pigeon-hole our style into a number, our thoughts get distorted. Instead, think objectively as to whether this is a style that you feel confident wearing or it’s a style that fits part or all of your lifestyle. There’s no use forcing it. Maybe the holes would drive you crazy and you’d want to mend them? Only wear if you feel confident doing so.

4. Worried about flashing skin? Look for designs that have a layer of cotton fabric under the rip or rips that aren’t completely open.

5. Do the rips yourself. As one follower pointed out on Instagram, she struggles with the thought of buying a pair of jeans that are ripped. The way around this is to work either with an old pair that you own and could do with a fresh take or buy a cheaper pair and DIY rip. Either way, you’ll reduce the financial risk of trying a trend that you may not be sure is for you. Try Denim and other brandsbasic denim jean. Google for help.
