It was one of those Friday nights when I was co-presenting A Curious Case with Martell on Cool 96.9FM. As I made it through the stairs to enter the studio, I looked at Wazobia FM through the transparent glass and saw this female DJ jamming and mixing some vibes. The smile on the face of DJ Snoop Da Damaja, resident Deejay at the station, who was present in the studio at that time, certifies that this lady got game. I promised myself that after my show I would drop by to meet her. I kept to my word and also took a selfie with her. Queen Martha Udeme aka DJ Moonlait is a native of Akwa Ibom state, based in Port Harcourt and currently in Lagos.
‘I am the 4th child in a family of 6. I am a woman of integrity and very hardworking. I officially started my DJ’ing career in 2012. It was already a hobby that was gradually distracting me from other businesses and my regular lifestyle. I always had the opportunity of traveling by road to Lagos for businesses and listening to various mixtapes which I was not too impressed with and felt I could do better. Randomly, a guy in church told me I looked like a DJ and I should learn how to be a professional one. That prompted me to learn DJing, I started playing at major gigs in PH, and played in almost all the big clubs in PH like Platinum, Lamborghini, Cubana, etc! I also played at Silverbird lounge and Rhythm FM, all in PH,’ she started to tell me her story.

In a country as ours where family folks are very opposed to a lady that tries to pick up a career in the entertainment industry, I asked her how her family reacted when she told them about her career path.

‘It was very difficult and challenging at first, which is very much expected in every line of industry. My family accepted especially my parents, few friends found it difficult to embrace but it didn’t take them long to accept my decision because they know I am a person of my words, I know what I want and I go for it. I was the first female DJ in Port Harcourt so when I’m on stage, if the crowd was dancing before, the moment I mount the stage they will all sit and watch me perform, they want to see what a female DJ can do, after 5-10 minutes the atmosphere goes up in flames and they start spraying money on me, some come forward to get my contacts. I learnt from DJ Big Joe that whenever I represent him at events, either the event planner or organizers would call him and reprimand him for sending a woman in his stead, but he just asks them to trust my skills. After I’m done playing they come and apologize, soon after they kept calling me directly for other gigs. Not too long 5 more female DJs came up after me.’

What is your view of the female DJ’ing industry in Nigeria?
‘The female DJ industry in Nigeria to me is weak… Most times they don’t believe in us and hardly want to give us chances because most people feel It’s for the male population and not a female thing. But with God on my side I’ll work so hard to make that difference and prove to people that what a man can do a woman can do better…(laughs) My fellow girls have been trying but I believe with enough belief in our capabilities we would soar higher.’
What should your audience look forward to from you in 2017?

‘They should expect more works, DJ Moonlait in a different direction! I’d be teaming up with my manager (Africanwhitechic) who believes so much in me. So I’d simply say watch out for DJ Moonlait! *2017* is my year of possibilities.’

REALITY CHECK ABOUT SOME ARTISTS & FILMMAKERS FROM ANGLOPHONE REGION OF CAMEROON by Ambawill Jones Yong

THE REASON WHY MUSIC AND FILM MAKING IS CONSIDER TO BE CREATIVE ARTS IS THE WAY IT INFLUENCE  THE MINDS OF IT CONSUMERS.
MUSIC MAKING AND FILM MAKING HAS ALWAYS BE INTERWOVEN THROUGH OUT HISTORY FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION, IN A TIME OF STRIVE AND CRISIS THAT FACES SOME SET OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN DEPRIVE FROM THEIR RIGHTS AND BECOME IMPOVERISH BY NEPOTISM AND MARGINALIZATION.THEY ALWAYS LOOK UP FOR SOME VOICES TO RISE UP AND EXPOSE THE SITUATION THEY GOING THROUGH AS A PEOPLE ,MUSIC ARTS AND FILM HAS ALWAYS BEEN THOSE FACET OF COMMUNICATION THAT EXPOSE TRUTH AND ILLS OF THE SOCIETY THAT HAS BEEN BRUSH UNDER THE CARPET

Tell the entertainers the truth? Music as part of it transmit message with the speed of light. If not of #Dr #Sley and a few infamous artists who believe in what makes a music an art, then we will never hear a melody like that of #Bob #Marley telling the realities of the world we live in. Greed of not losing fame and fortune is what all this our some how mushroom musicians and entertainers are in fear of. (We thought they are famous but I reduced them to a vegetable size because the fail to sing the realities of this present crisis in our lands) instead they concentrate in composing songs and singing in French language as if being an anglophone is a mistake. Worse of it, running to corrupt #CRTV for promotion(the main station killing our fight for right by hiding the truth) The madness called Cameroon Film Industry is leading by Anglophone community, organizing festivals and calling on lRC ministers to come and cheer for them(we are capable of making Ambazonia Film and Music Industry a better gain for our citizens) and at this moment in time we expect them to prove themselves as creative film makers, but they fail us by organizing festivals by labeling Cameroon Film Festivals for international recognition. For how long have we been as creative individuals and making the incomes for us? Have no recognition as public figures and compare to entertainments in other countries? This is because of marginalization of us and greed from the dubious leaders that has gone a long  way to instill fear in our art. without LRC we are in a better chance to have not only national iconic images but internationally known.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH AND I AM FOR #AMBAZONIANS#WILL of INDEPENDENCE. Call #Mr #Leo, call #Daphne, call #Magasco , #Blaise B, #Stanley #Enow#Reniss#Jovi#Salatiel, all the #Film #makers and the host of other renown Anglophone artists and tell them that they have failed us. Do you know the most funniest of it all? They said they are #artists and not #politicians and not to involve in our fight for freedom. this is the reply I got from the last time I wrote #wonderful #thing. They are better known as Francophone artists( better than being a disgrace to anglophone community) all your works of art glorify La République du Cameroun. the regime that arrest , retain and assassinate people who speak for us. Their greed is the same with that of our parliamentarians who don't want to stand for us. We loss our love ones day by day and the blocked minds say we should not speak. God has commanded us to speak and stand firmly for us. No little mind can go against us. Anyone who declares his or her self an #Ambazonian is My HERO. this is my write up and I approved Ambawill Jones Yong.

MODELS & VIDEO VIXENS SURVIVING IN AN INDUSTRY THAT UNDERPAYS

The significant roles of models in the demand and supply chain of products and services in any society cannot be over emphasized. They play a major part in the promotion and advertisement of brands across board. I am of the opinion that they are arguably one of the unsung heroes when a brand becomes successful. Whether it’s runway, glamour, fitness, bikini, promotional or commercial print modeling, models are one of the major influencer that attract target audiences to purchase goods and services. If advertisement is instrumental to the success of brands, then we can conclude that the use of models to communicate advertisement is very important to the breakthrough of brands as well.

In today’s music industry dominated by hip-hop vibes, the influence of hip-hop models and video vixens is enormous. It does not matter if morally you concur to that profession or not, the fact remains, as long as sex sells and hip-hop music continues to be prominent, video vixens will continue to be in demand; like the saying, ‘Don’t hate the player, hate the game’. Arguably, it will be hard to separate the importance of hip-hop models and video vixens from the success of a hip-hop music video. To be candid, vixens drive massive viewership to hip-hop music videos. Vixens indirectly generate income for artistes from YouTube; they drive audiences to show up at concerts and are also significant to the amount of income artistes receive in royalties from television networks

As several multinationals continue to make inroad into Africa and especially Nigeria to establish and increase their market share, it will not take a rocket scientist to realize that marketing budgets will increase and in so doing, models will be in demand. The influx will also benefit artistes by making money from various activations and brand endorsements. As artistes continue to make money, they will be shooting more videos and by so doing video vixens will have opportunities to make more money as well.
Ideally, this is how the story should read but the reality on ground tells a different story.

Considering the amount of work they put in, models and video vixens are not getting the reward they deserve because their industry lacks proper regulation and much deserved recognition. This limitation is not out of the ordinary; the music industry, disc jockeys, and also the photography industry have all passed through this hurdle.

There was once a time when artistes received peanuts to entertain and disc jockeying was not seen as a premium profession. There was a time when the art of photography could not be respected more than the way they are viewed in campuses but today the story is different. Gone are the days when no child dares tell his or her parents that they intend to choose any of those professions. Today, music, disc jockeying and photography have become high earning jobs. Who knows, models and video vixens may be making more than enough from their industry in the nearest future. In my quest to understand the state of the modeling and video vixen industry in Nigeria, I sat with several models, video vixens, and their various managers to understand the progress they have made and the difficulties limiting their profession. With the existence of several modeling agencies and the encouraging numbers of hip-hop models/vixens/dance groups, it’s obvious that the country is churning out a considerate amount of models and video vixens in this country, which begs the question; why are most of them underpaid despite the fact that there is demand for their services?

The general consensus is that they earn less most times because most of their clients seldom want to pay them professionally. Clients constantly request professional services from models and video vixens but they don’t want to pay with the same rules.
They (client) always request for the best that suits their target. They want the finest that portrays their brands. The models and video vixens in that level have invested on their own brands to tick those boxes. They have expended a lot physically and mentally to fit that bill, so why won’t they want to pay? While some clients pay pretty well, other don’t because they think they will go for any random or desperate few to give them professional services which often they don’t get. Most clients need to wake up to the realization that this is a professional industry’ – words from a video vixen’s manager who wants to remain anonymous.

Despite the fact that the industry lacks proper structure, people are still making little  money. Some dancers and video vixens are still doing about two to three  jobs in a week earning close to one hundred thousand, so imagine if the structure is right, more money will be made.

I feel our industry is still in a baby stage  same as the music industry in cameroon. I feel the need for a structure that treats us as professionals is needed for us to compete globally. By this I imply price, quality, time, recognition and most importantly RESPECT. Our content is now being exported  and the world is receiving it with open arms’.

To progress, we would need stronger platforms to learn, enhance and transfer skills to upcoming models and vixens. We aint gon’ be here forever. We need to enlighten Cameroonians that models/vixens are not music video add-ons, prostitutes, or escorts rather we are the art expressing an artiste’s content. It takes a lot more than a beautiful face or body to stand in front of a camera and interact. To move forward, models/vixens and producers should always work with respect and professionalism so we don’t keep passing the wrong message to the society about our industry’

Cardi's only the second female rapper to top the Hot 100 without featuring someone else on the song. Lauryn Hill was the last to do it with "Doo Wop (That Thing)" in 1998.
Congrats, Cardi!

It will stun Nigerian and some urban  music enthusiasts that David ‘Davido’ Adeleke despite the regular showcase of his opulent lifestyle, isn’t the highest paid artiste in Nigeria.

Seasoned artiste manager, Alex Ozone has revealed the highest paid artiste in Nigeria.
Ozone said that YBNL boss, Olamide Adedeji, popularly known as Olamide or Badoo is currently the highest paid in terms of international shows.
Ozone said this in a chat with Showtime while commenting on fees Nigerian artistes charge for shows in the United Kingdom and United States.
The manager, who has over 17-years experience in artiste management, revealed that though Davido, Wizkid, Tekno, Kiss Daniel and others are worth a fortune, Olamide is the most expensive.

According to him, “The business doesn’t have a fixed price, it depends on the artiste; I cannot tell you how much each of them is worth.

“But like I told you, I have worked with Wizkid, Tekno, Oritsefemi, Patoranking, Davido, Terry G, Kiss Daniel, YQ, Skales, Olamide, and Timaya.
“They are all good, they know their worth. But in Nigeria, Olamide has the highest rate.”
