Conquering the modelling world
Balmain, Dolce and Gabbana, Miu Miu, Yves Saint Laurent, Dior, Prada, Marc Jacobs, you name it, Nigerian model, Mayowa Nicholas, has donned the big fashion labels, worked with various international brands and featured in Vogue Italia.
Before entering the competition, Nicholas, then 16, had no modelling experience.
Her journey to fame began in 2014 after competing in and winning the female category of the Elite Model Look Nigeria (EMLN) competition. Before entering the competition, Nicholas, then 16, had no modelling experience. By her account, she never dreamt of being a model. But shortly before entering the competition, she began to follow fashion shows on television and found that she fit the bill of a model. She went into the EMLN, practicing catwalk and poses by herself.
The EMLN was her first time on the runway and she impressed the judges. When she was announced winner, Mayowa broke down in tears because, as she told Encomium, she wasn’t expecting to win, considering her lack of experience. She took home a cash prize of $5, 000 with other gifts. Later that year, she went on to represent Nigeria at the world finals of the competition in China. She made top ten and her career took off from there.
The Lagos girl
Nicholas was born in Ifako, Ijaiye, Lagos State. The eldest of three children, she lost her father early in life and was brought up by her mother who works at the Ikeja Pensions Board, Lagos. As of 2014, she was studying Accounting at Crawford University, Igbesa, Ogun State, Nigeria, but put that on hold to pursue modelling full time.
Nicholas, now 18, is strutting her stuff on runways across Europe and America. In June this year, she appeared in an advert alongside other models and American actress, Amanda Seyfried in Miu Mui’s Fall/Winter 2016 campaign. Model.com named her one of its Top Newcomers Fall/Winter 2016. Vogue also named her one of 15 New Faces that Ruled Fall 2016.
